What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a process in which one or more titanium posts are surgically placed into the jawbone and artificial teeth are attached to that implant to replace damaged or missing teeth. Through a process called osseointegration, over time the bone in the jaw will grow and fuse to the implant making the implant extremely durable while providing a strong anchor for natural-looking artificial teeth. In some cases, a patient may only need a single tooth replaced and in those instances, a crown is attached to the implant with an abutment. This is ideal for patient only needing a single tooth replaced.

All-on-4s refer to a process in which four implants are placed in the jawbone on which a full arch of artificial teeth, sometimes called overdentures, are attached. This is ideal for patients with ample bone structure who need multiple teeth replaced.

Together, these three components create a solution that looks and feels just like your natural pearly whites. You’ll be able to chew all of your favorite foods with ease. Additionally, dental implants can potentially last for decades.

Benefits of Dental Implants

The benefits of dental implants are extensive, which is why dentists often recommend implants over traditional tooth replacements such as bridge or dentures. Benefits can include:

      • Dental implants look and function like natural teeth
      • They are a permanent solution – nothing to constantly put in or take out!
      • They do not damage adjacent teeth or bone structure
      • Allows for normal flossing and oral home care
      • Very secure and comfortable
      • Significantly improves the ability to chew
      • Preserves bone in the jaw
      • No adhesive or powders required for dentures to stick
      • Restores lip support
      • Helps maintain facial structure
      • Minimizes wrinkles

Our Technology

Cone Beam 3D Imaging

We utilize CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) imaging for each of our dental implant patients. This 3D imaging is a cutting-edge alternative to the traditional CT scan and an incredible improvement on the traditional x-ray. This machine takes 3D and digital panoramic images of your mouth, allowing us to monitor growth and diagnose problems, as well as view your entire mouth from every angle — in less than 20 seconds! We use these images to plan the precise placement of your dental implant posts to ensure the best possible fit and comfort.

3D Printing

One of the most common questions we are asked regarding the implant process is what will happen during the 3 to 6 month healing process once the implant posts are placed. On the day of your implant procedure, our office prints 3D prosthetics that can be attached to the new implants, allowing you to walk out of our office with a new smile the day of your procedure!

The Dental Implant Process

Assessment

The process begins with an assessment of your situation to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. To complete our Dental Implant Assessment online, click HERE. Once the assessment has been submitted and reviewed, a member of our team will reach out to you.

Consultation

After your initial assessment, you will be scheduled for a consultation appointment to meet with the dentist as well as our implant coordinator. We’ll take 3D imaging to get a picture of your jawbone structure and determine if you are a candidate for implants. Our advanced imaging technology also allows the dentist create a 3D computer simulation of your mouth to determine precise placement of each implant and ensure the aesthetic and functional properties of your implants and artificial teeth. We will also discuss payment and financing options based on your individual treatment plan and needs. We understand dental implants are a significant financial investment and because we believe in their value and benefits, we have a range of options and will work with you to develop treatment and financial plans that make sense for you.

Procedure

Once you have made the decision to move forward with dental implants, we will schedule your surgery. During the implant procedure a metal post is surgically placed into the jaw, the position precisely determined by the 3D imaging from your i-CAT Cone Beam Scan. This post will act as a permanent “root” for the implanted tooth. Once in place, the surrounding bone and tissue need time to heal. Typically, the initial healing takes 7-10 days, followed by 3-6 months for the implant to fulling integrate in the bone. During the initial healing phase, patients will have a 3D printed prosthetic to serve as a temporary set of teeth, which we print on-site. Once your implant post has healed completely, you will then be fitted with the implant crown or implant-supported denture, made from zirconia.
